How To Make Affogato

How To Make Affogato

How to make Affogato at home? Enjoy an espresso with that certain extra? Delicate vanilla ice cream encased in an intensely aromatic espresso – the Italian dessert with an extra portion of caffeine, refreshment, and sweet touch.

What are we talking about? The affogato, of course! We at coffeebeaneries have also tried the coffee trend and are thrilled with the result!

Today we will show you how you can easily prepare the delicious Affogato recipe yourself at home or how you can serve Affogato for several guests.

What is Affogato?

Affogato is a delicious dessert consisting of a scoop of vanilla ice cream topped with a freshly brewed espresso. Literally translated, “affogato” means “to drown”.

We prefer the term “symbiosis” between ice and espresso – because the ice slowly melts in the espresso and both are mixed into a wonderfully aromatic melange.

A real taste experience that is aromatic and at the same time sweet and refreshing. And best of all, the delicious recipe can be made at home with just a few ingredients. All you need is an espresso machine and coffee beans for espresso, cold ice, and a suitable glass.

Suitable for this are transparent thick-walled glasses and deep espresso glasses so that you can observe the live effect of the Affogato through the glass, after all, the eye eats with you.

The Invention Of Affogato

Who invented this sensational delicious dessert? The Italians of course! In Italy, people know what culinary enjoyment means.

Even though classic espresso is the undisputed favorite drink of Italians, the affogato al caffè is an equally popular dessert, especially on hot summer days!

It is typically served as a “dolce” at the end of a meal or as a refreshing and sweet snack. Gourmets and lovers of sweet and milder coffees also like the Affogato as the first coffee drink on a hot summer day, instead of classic espresso.

This is how you can enjoy the perfect mixture of caffeine and coffee flavor with a refined sweetness and freshness on top!

Affogato Recipe

Serve the espresso and the ice in separate glasses. Then slowly pour the espresso over the ice and enjoy with a small spoon! The affogato is ready!

Attention: If you want to serve the delicious dessert to family or friends, then you should not pour the espresso over the ice while preparing it. That way the ice cream would start melting right away, even before you’ve served it.

Instead, serve the ice cream and espresso in separate glasses. The espresso is then poured over the ice at the table.

TIP

Preparing the coffee in a Chemex or in an espresso maker is particularly suitable if you want to offer a delicious dessert to several guests.

With it, you can brew the desired amount of coffee, serve the ice cream in several bowls and simply place the espresso in the chosen cup in the middle of your table. Each guest then gets a scoop of ice cream and can help themselves to the coffee.

ALTERNATIVE PREPARATION

You can change the basic Affogato recipe as you like, according to your own taste. Maybe you don’t like classic vanilla ice cream? Then exchange it for chocolate, stracciatella, hazelnut, pistachio, or almond!

The most important thing is that the type of ice cream you choose is creamy and that the espresso is freshly made. A few other Affogato recipes that won us over are the following:

  • Affogato al caffè con cioccolato: Affogato that is refined with fine pieces of chocolate or chocolate sprinkles. Simply grate your favorite chocolate over the ice cream and enjoy!
  • Affogato al caffè con panna: Here the affogato is topped with a touch of fresh, cold cream.

Which coffee beans are best for Affogato?

As for any coffee specialty, high-quality coffee beans are of course the basic requirement for Affogato. Especially because the coffee must of course not lose its aroma if you add ice after brewing. If you also prefer the milder variant in between, we recommend coffees whose intensity can be weakened without having to compromise on the delicious aroma.

For an Affogato, blends made from Arabica and Robusta beans are usually used in cafes. But is this really optimal?

As so often, it depends on your preferences. Basically, you can easily use the type of espresso for your Affogato coffee that tastes best.

The probability is then quite high that it will also taste as delicious as an Affogato.
